Staff writer Elvia Limón reports:

A former maintenance worker at Ferris Junior High School is accused of groping a pre-teen student at the produce shop where he also worked.

Adalberto Monreal Mares, 39, is charged with indecency with a child in connection with the 2014 incident at the Fruteria shop in the 100 block of East Beltline Road in Wilmer.

The teen, who is 13 now, told her school counselor about the allegations last week. She said she knew the man as the husband of one of her mother’s friends.

The girl’s mother sent her to the shop, just a few block from home, to buy tomatoes. When the girl went to pay, she said Mares asked her for a hug.

She agreed and went behind the counter of the otherwise empty shop. That’s when Mares unbuttoned her shirt and groped her breasts, she told police. She fled after a car pulled up to the shop.
