The owner of a DeSoto physical rehabilitation clinic has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in federal prison for billing the government $9.5 million in fraudulent worker compensation claims, the U.S. attorney’s office said.

Larry Washington, 63, also was ordered last week to pay about $7.7 million in restitution.

He must begin serving his sentence in July.

A licensed professional counselor from DeSoto, Washington pleaded guilty in January to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud for his role in the “massive health care fraud scheme,” authorities said.

Nearly 30 defendants, including doctors and claims examiners, were convicted in the fraud ring, which involved bribes, unnecessary medical treatment and fraudulent billing in connection with the Department of Labor’s worker compensation program.

They included 21 former government workers.

In one case, Perry Rowell, a Dallas-based senior claims examiner from the Office of Worker Compensation Programs, received $24,000 in bribes from former examiner Ifeanyi “Tim” Egbuchunam, authorities said.

Some Mind Spa patients were given conflicting symptoms and conditions. One person was described as having trouble sleeping and later the same patient was reported to be sleeping all the time — in the same document.
