Brent Bartel is being held in the Tarrant County Jail on $1 million bail.

A trial begins today for a Richland Hills man accused of carving a pentagram on his son’s back because he believed his wife was cheating on him.

Brent Bartel’s attorney is expected to mount an insanity defense in the case because Bartel has schizo-affective disorder, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

“Dismiss [the charges] because I’m without sin,” Bartel has told his lawyer, according to the newspaper, which cited court documents.

Police say Bartel, 42, used a box cutter to carve the image onto his 6-year-old son’s back in December 2012, then smeared the boy’s blood around the front doorway of the family’s home on Ruth Road.

He then called 911 and told a dispatcher that it was a holy day and he had “shed some innocent blood,” according to a recording of the call.
