Ethan Couch’s mother to appear in Los Angeles court for extradition hearing today Naheed Rajwani
Ethan Couch’s mother, Tonya, is expected to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom this morning for a hearing that will determine whether or not she will be extradited to Tarrant County, where authorities expect to prosecute her for helping her son flee the country.
The so-called “affluenza” teen remains 1,800 miles away, in a Mexico City detention center where he is expected to meet an attorney to decide whether or not he will continue fighting deportation to the U.S. The process could take months if Couch moves forward with his appeal.
Fernando Benitez, his high-profile Mexican attorney, told NBC News he filed the appeal last week to prolong Ethan Couch’s removal from Mexico because he worries the 18-year-old is “going to be kicked out of the country without due process.”
As of Monday, though, Benitez had not met Ethan Couch or talked to him, NBC reported. He declined to say who was paying him to represent the teenager, who sparked an international manhunt after skipping a check-in with his probation officer in December.
