Testimony started Tuesday in the murder trial of a Dallas man accused of shooting his uncle “in cold blood” at a family barbecue last spring.

Corey Demon Franklin, 38, is charged in the May 17 slaying of Jerry Johnson, 68.

The shooting followed an argument between the two men in the backyard at Johnson’s mother’s house, on Huckleberry Circle in east Oak Cliff. When the older man turned to leave, prosecutors say, Franklin shot Johnson multiple times.

In opening statements Monday, prosecutor Emily Antram said Franklin “shot and killed his uncle in cold blood.”

But defense attorney Stephen Duplantis said the family has a complicated history. He said Franklin was terrified of his uncle and shot him after he refused to back away.

“This is a very complex situation, like an onion,” Duplantis said. “As we peel the layers, we can see a family. A family that has been rotting.”
