Staff writer Caleb Downs reports:
Two men from Tarrant County were sentenced to five years in federal prison for operating an investment Ponzi scheme that cheated people out of more than $2.4 million over seven years.
Kurtis Keith Lowe, 63, of Fort Worth and Robert Allen Blackburn, 49, of Arlington have also been ordered to pay over $2 million each in restitution, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office.
The men pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud in July, and they must turn themselves in to the Bureau of Prisons on Nov. 13.
Prosecutors say Blackburn, who was a licensed insurance agent at the time, first convinced someone to invest in Omni Capital Management in 2004, knowing that it was not a functioning company.
Lowe, who was the sole owner of Omni, then deposited the investor’s check into Omni’s bank account, making sure Blackburn received his portion of the money as well. The money was never actually invested.
The men created fake phone lines, tax forms, account statements and out-of-state mailing addresses to give the appearance of legitimacy to their operation.
