From the Texas DPS’ just-released “2015 Texas Gang Threat Assessment”

It’s that time of the year again — when the Texas Department of Public Safety releases its annual Texas Gang Threat Assessment and reminds us, yet again, that Tango Blast, Texas Syndicate, Texas Mexican Mafia, Mara Salvatrucha (better known as MS-13) and the Latin Kings continue to dominate the rankings. Says the report, which you can read below, this is why: “These groups pose the greatest gang threat to Texas due to their relationships with Mexican cartels, high levels of transnational criminal activity, level of violence, and overall statewide presence.” But that’s statewide. What about North Texas?

We’re identified in the report as Region 1, and, yes, cartel-affiliated gangs are “significant” here as well, per the report. So too are the Crips and Bloods, the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas and Sureños, a loose conglomeration of Mexican Mafia offshoots that started in Southern California and has become “one of the most violent gangs” in that part of the country.

“The Aryan Brotherhood of Texas and Aryan Circle maintain a strong presence east of Dallas in the Garland and Mesquite areas, while the Latin Kings have been increasingly active in northern Fort Worth and Denton,” says the report. “Law enforcement agencies around the region also report a significant presence of Gangster Disciples, Norteños, 18th Street, Mara-Salvatrucha
29 (MS-13), and Texas Syndicate. Officials in the Dallas-Fort Worth area note the presence of local gangs like the Eastside Homeboys and Varrio Northside.” And they’re into everything — from stealing goods to selling people.

The report says that 25 percent of all gang members sent to Texas prisons in FY 2015 were from the North Texas region — and that 90 percent of those were from Dallas-Fort Worth.

“Because of their propensity for violence and close associations with ruthless Mexican cartels, gangs are a serious threat to public safety in Texas,” says DPS director Steven McCraw in a prepared statement. “Our residents have a right to live free from fear and crime, and DPS remains steadfast in our mission to identify, dismantle and disrupt these criminal organizations.” … [visit site to read more]
