A Coppell veterinarian who last paid personal income taxes in 1998 despite working full time has admitted in federal court documents to illegally avoiding paying taxes by filing bogus lawsuits claiming he had no obligation to do so.
William C. Stearman III, owner of Coppell Veterinary Hospital and an “avowed tax protester,” dodged his taxes for years after a Texas lawyer he knew helped him stymie the government’s collection efforts, records show.
The lawyer, identified in court records as “John Doe,” claimed to be a tax expert who helped others legally avoid paying taxes, authorities said.
Stearman met the lawyer in 1999 and then began making “frivolous arguments employing preposterous, bizarre” and false interpretations of common law, the U.S. Constitution and internal revenue laws, documents say.
Stearman has agreed to plead guilty to one count of corrupt endeavor to obstruct or impede the due administration of the Internal Revenue Laws. A federal judge will have to approve the plea deal before it is official.
Stearman started his practice in 1978 and said his hobby is sailing, which he has done for 35 years, according to the vet hospital’s website. “When I’m not sailing, I love to cook and pair wine for the meal,” he says on the website.
Stearman has had a “long and acrimonious history” with the Internal Revenue Service, court records show.
He used harassing and frivolous lawsuits — and threatened IRS agents with suits — to avoid paying taxes, records show. He continued to abuse the legal system even after being fined tens of thousands of dollars for filing lawsuits as a delay tactic, authorities said.
One of his claims was that taxpayers are fiduciaries and that he had no agreement with the IRS to act as a fiduciary, according to court records.
