Ruben Galvan

Dallas police say a second man wanted in connection with the 2009 Oak Cliff assassination of a Mexican drug cartel member is in custody — after he escaped from an Oklahoma prison camp in 2014, made his way to Mexico and was sent back to Houston last month.

Police have also provided 34-year-old Ruben Galvan with a very simple motive for that long-ago murder: revenge.

Thirty-nine-year-old José Arrez Rangel is already behind bars for the April 20, 2009, shooting of Antonio Avilez-Sanchez in front of Morelia Mexican Restaurant on W. Jefferson Boulevard. In May 2011 it took a jury all of 40 minutes to find the hit man guilty of assassinating Aviles-Sánchez, a member of the La Familia drug cartel member who federal officials said was about to be indicted when he was gunned down in the parking lot.

Police said nearly 40 bullets — including AK-47 rounds — were spent during the killing in April 2009. Police found Rangel by following a trail of blood that led to a Davis Street bridge. He’d been shot in the foot during the shootout with Avilez-Sanchez, and eventually confessed to being at the restaurant at the time of the shooting.

According to the affidavit, Rangel voluntarily gave a videotaped statement in which he said he was brought to Dallas by Galvan to kill Avilez-Sanchez “because several years ago [he[ had killed someone in Galvan’s family and wanted revenge.” Rangel told police that Galvan was “the main shooter,” and that he’d used a rifle to assassinate Avilez-Sanchez. A DEA agent working the case had cell phone records that tied Galvan to the scene of the crime.

During Rangel’s trial in May 2011, Dallas Police Detective Scott Sayers told jurors Galvan’s name was on a piece of paper in Rangel’s wallet when he was arrested. But he also said that Galvan hadn’t been charged because there wasn’t any DNA tying him to the scene. But, if nothing else, Dallas police knew where he’d be — behind bars, after he’d pleaded guilty to drug trafficking. … [visit site to read more]
