A car totaled in a DWI crash was on display at The Summit in Grand Prairie, where Wednesday’s press conference was held.

Staff writer Nicholas Friedman reports:

Matt Lundy was on his way back from a trip to Oklahoma in 2009 when a drunken driver changed his life and ended his best friend’s.

A woman whose blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit blew through a red light at an Arlington intersection and plowed into their car.

“It’s something you won’t forget,” he said Wednesday.

The 20-year-old from Arlington spoke as part of the Dallas County DWI Task Force’s initiative to head off drinking and driving over the holidays.

In the past, the task force has been a joint effort between law enforcement in Dallas and Tarrant counties. This year, Denton County joined the 30-year initiative.

“This is the catalyst in solving an egregious problem,” Grand Prairie Police Chief Steve Dye said. “Reporting and preventing drunk driving is a social responsibility that we all bear.”

Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen said everyone should know the statistics and the dangers of driving drunk by now.

“Even drunk drivers know the statistics,” he said. “That’s not enough.”
