The family of a Maypearl man who committed suicide in June is blaming the city’s former police chief for the death, alleging the chief harassed the man for two years after he accused the chief of having sex with teens.

That chief, Kevin Coffey, was arrested on sexual assault charges a month after James Everette Meyer died. Coffey has since resigned from his post.

In the suit filed Wednesday, Meyer’s family alleges Coffey made death threats and followed Meyer through the city for two years after he accused him of having sex with teenage girls.

Coffey, 49, faces felony charges of indecency with a child by exposure, indecency with a child by contact, sexual performance by a child and sexual assault of a child, according to the Ellis County District Attorney’s office.

Meyer caught wind of the allegations in April 2013 from his daughters, who attended Maypearl High School, his family states in the lawsuit. Coffey was a police sergeant at the time.

Meyer told the police chief at the time about the allegations, but “it appeared to Meyer that no immediate action would be taken to address the allegations,” according to the suit.

For the next two years, the suit alleges, Coffey threatened to frame Meyer for crimes, made death threats, stalked Meyer and his family and instructed other officers to question the family through “pretextual traffic stops.”

Meyer “became obsessed with the fear that he would be falsely accused and imprisoned for criminal acts he never committed,” the suit states. “The stress became so great it ultimately led to Mr. Meyer committing suicide to escape the harassment by Chief Coffey.”
