Floyd Simpson, a 25-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department who in 2012 became the chief of police in Corpus Christi, died Sunday evening in a motorcycle crash in Port Aransas, according to the police chief there.

Port Aransas Police Chief Scott Burroughs says it’s still early in the investigation, but that the circumstances appear “cut-and-dried.” The accident, he says, occurred around 5:50 Sunday evening.

Burroughs says the accident occurred along Texas State Highway 361, the heavily trafficked highway connecting Port Aransas and Corpus Christi. Simpson, he says, was on a motorcycle heading south, back to Corpus Christi, when a Ford pickup traveling north crossed the center lane and “veered into southbound traffic.”

A white car in front of Simpson “took evasive by driving off the roadway and toward the bar ditch there. The chief laid down his bike.” And when he did so, Burroughs says, Simpson’s helmet “came dislodged, and he hit his head against the road.” Simpson, he says, died from injuries sustained from the impact. Burroughs says it doesn’t appear the vehicles contacted with each other.

Simpson’s family, including wife of 27 years Tanya, has been notified.

Before he moved to Corpus Christi three years ago Simpson was a popular and extraordinarily well-liked veteran of the Dallas Police Department.

“I think that the job of police chief is people-oriented,” Simpson told The Dallas Morning News in 2010. “I think that you have to get people to like you in order for them to follow you.
